At Quasar Expeditions, we believe that true adventure extends beyond breathtaking landscapes and thrilling encounters. It's about creating lasting, positive impacts on the destinations we explore. Our Guests aren’t just seeing the world; they’re actively helping shape its future.

This belief is the foundation of our adventures, and our latest initiative in the Galapagos Islands is a shining example: the installation of two biodigesters and the creation of an organic garden at the School of Hospitality Services of the Galapagos National College.

By aligning with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from Affordable and Clean Energy to Quality Education, we are contributing to a global effort to foster environmental stewardship and community well-being. Let’s dive into the details.

Transforming Waste into Opportunity

Envision a world where everyday waste is not a problem but a valuable resource. Our biodigester turns this vision into reality.

By converting organic waste into biogas and biofertilizer, we’re not just managing waste; we’re creating resources that fuel a sustainable future. This technology helps cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and encourages a circular economy where nothing goes to waste.

Benefits of Biodigesters:

  • Waste Management: Efficiently manages organic waste, reducing landfill use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Clean Energy: Produces biogas, a clean and renewable energy source for cooking and heating, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Soil Enrichment: Generates biofertilizer that enriches the soil, promoting healthier crop growth and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • Sustainability: Supports a circular economy by recycling nutrients and energy, closing the loop in waste management and agriculture.

Creating a Living Classroom

In an ideal world, responsible tourism goes hand-in-hand with community involvement—and our organic garden is a vibrant symbol of sustainability and education. Here, students don’t just learn about sustainability, they experience it firsthand.

Through this hands-on project, Galapagos students cultivate fresh produce, gain practical skills, and contribute to a model of self-sufficiency that can inspire communities across the Galapagos. This garden is more than a learning tool; it's a living classroom where the principles of sustainable agriculture come to life.

Some Love the Biodigestor Technical Details

For those who revel in the technical side of things, here’s a peek into how it all works.

Our biodigester is a marvel of modern eco-engineering. It takes organic waste—like kitchen scraps, agricultural byproducts, and animal manure—and through a process called anaerobic digestion, it transforms these materials into biogas and biofertilizer. The biogas, mainly methane and carbon dioxide, can be used as a clean energy source for cooking and heating, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Meanwhile, the biofertilizer enriches the soil, promoting healthy crop growth in our organic garden.

This process not only helps manage waste but also conserves resources. By recycling nutrients back into the soil and producing renewable energy, we’re closing the loop in waste management and agriculture. It’s a win-win for sustainability, and a win-win for the Galapagos community.

Acknowledging Our Partners

None of this would be possible without the dedication and expertise of our key partners:

  • EcoInventagri: Their generous donation of biodigesters was pivotal in making this project a reality. Specializing in agri-food processing equipment, Inventagri’s support has enabled us to transform organic waste into valuable resources efficiently.
  • Johannes Kepler School: Their educational model and experience with biodigesters provided invaluable insights and inspiration. Their workshops for Galapagos teachers, students, and parents were instrumental in sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Piedad Viteri: As Executive Director of Ecopoblaciones Ecuador, Piedad’s expertise in Education for sustainable development was crucial. Her guidance ensured that our model is not only effective but also replicable.
  • Gabriela Guaycha & Miriam Montesdeoca: Their leadership in managing the project’s social and administrative aspects kept everything running smoothly on the ground. Their dedication was vital in ensuring the project’s success.
  • Sheyla Rosero: Her architectural expertise helped design the organic garden to meet our sustainability goals. Her local knowledge ensured that the garden is well-suited to the Galapagos environment.

Each contribution has been a vital piece of the puzzle, helping to lay the foundation for a model that can inspire and drive positive change throughout the Galapagos and beyond.

What This Means for Our Travelers

At Quasar Expeditions, we understand that our adventurers seek more than just extraordinary adventures—you want your journey to leave a positive impact. By doing your due-diligence, you’re contributing to a vision of responsible tourism that goes beyond sightseeing.

Overtourism has strained many of the world’s most beautiful destinations, including the Galapagos. This pressure can lead to environmental degradation and diminish the quality of local life. By choosing to travel with Quasar, you’re joining a movement that prioritizes sustainability and respect for the places we explore.

Responsible tourism with Quasar Expeditions

Responsible tourism isn’t just a trend, but a crucial aspect of preserving these incredible destinations for tomorrow’s generations. After all, Ecuador is our homeland, and we want our grandchildren to enjoy its wonders too.

Building a Model for Tomorrow

The impact of these projects goes beyond the walls of the school. By demonstrating the viability of these sustainable practices, we’re setting a precedent for future initiatives throughout the Galapagos. Our goal is to inspire others—schools and tour companies in particular—to embrace these practices and contribute to a cleaner, fairer world. In the realm of travel, every footprint matters.

Join us in celebrating this transformative journey. Explore how Quasar's sustainable travel efforts are not only shaping the Galapagos but also redefining what it means to travel with purpose.
