I arrived at Hacienda Zuleta in Ecuador seeking silence on our honeymoon. In my mind, deserving silence. I had earned my vacation, plowing through deadlines, Zoom meetings, and the wedding planning. “I hate to come home to a dirty house,” I thought, as I willed myself to laundry-zero, packed our bags, maniacally organized, and plowed ahead on the following week’s to-do list.
Exhale. Having escaped the frenzy, vacation had finally arrived. As I stepped onto the stunning Hacienda Zuleta property, captivated by endless skies and lush valleys, you could hear a pin drop. There it was—the break from constant overstimulation I was so looking forward to—in the form of deafening silence. Gazing across the vast expanse, I heard a haunting question rise from the core of the earth and dance across the pyramid-filled fields, finally surfacing inside of me.
“Now what?”
A disheartening truth: When I was finally immersed in the quiet I was craving (and knew I needed), I didn’t know what to do with it.
When was the last time you sat still, did nothing, and didn’t feel the overwhelming desire to get up and get something done? Never? Overstimulation and noise without the critical balance of relaxation and silence is the perfect recipe for stress. It’s the tension in your shoulders. The nagging sense that you’re perpetually behind. The merry-go-round in your mind you can’t seem to hop off.
Most of us don’t know what to do with silence, because we’ve forgotten how to “just be.” Quiet brings you into the present moment. Then the “monkey mind,” more comfortable in the land of list-making than in the land of feeling emotions, tries to escape the cage of silence.
I’ve personally spent the last 15 years trying to become more comfortable with silence. A ten-day silent Vipassana retreat. Hours of reading about how to be cool with “just being.” Years of yoga and meditation, both practicing and teaching. Yet still, when confronted with longer moments of silence, my mind squirms and squeals for more “doing.” Can you relate?
Historically, silence was an element of our natural state. The peace offered by quiet was prized and sought after through sitting still, practicing meditation, and enjoying unplugged quality time. No pressure to be plugged in or on call. The option didn’t even exist. People gladly accepted the invitation to be with themselves, free from distraction.
Anyone can experience the solitude of yesteryear, but like anything worth doing, it takes practice.
These days, In an increasingly noisy world, the allure of silence has evolved into a sought-after luxury, especially in the realm of travel. Recent “quiet luxury” trends indicate a growing preference for serene escapes that offer respite from the clamor of daily life. This shift underscores a deep-seated desire to reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings through moments of tranquility.
“As modern travelers increasingly seek respite from the demands and complexities of everyday life, a new trend known as quiet luxury is emerging in the travel industry. This trend focuses on discrete and secluded getaways that offer exclusive, yet understated, luxury.”
-“The Emergence of 'Quiet Luxury' as a Travel Trend” - Medium
Silence transcends mere absence of noise; it is a gateway to profound introspection and connection. My Ecuador and Galapagos journeys with Quasar Expeditions have illuminated the transformative power of silence as a luxury on small-group adventures.
Journey to Hacienda Zuleta in Ecuador
Nestled in the Andean highlands near Quito, Hacienda Zuleta epitomizes tranquility. On this 17th Century working farm and boutique hotel, amid rolling hills and the distant calls of Andean condors, I found a sanctuary where the rhythms of nature set the pace. Away from the hustle and bustle, the serene atmosphere of Zuleta invited introspection and renewal. It’s a place where silence isn’t just a luxury but an essential component of the experience, allowing guests to reconnect with nature and recharge amidst Ecuador’s breathtaking landscapes.
Exploring the Galapagos on a Yacht Safari
On a Galapagos Luxury Cruise, guided by top Naturalists like Lulu, silence took on a new dimension. During a stop at Bartolomé Island, Lulu encouraged us to embrace moments of quiet observation. In just 60 seconds of silence, I witnessed the vibrant marine life and panoramic views with heightened clarity and gratitude. This experience underscored how silence enhances our connection to the natural world, deepening our appreciation for its wonders.
