At Quasar Expeditions, every journey begins with a question. What’s out there? Who will we meet? How will this place change us?
One question we hear most often from curious guests is:
Where does the name “Quasar” come from?
The name “Quasar” sparks curiosity—and that’s exactly the point. It’s a nod to both our roots in science and exploration, and the extraordinary journeys we create. Here’s how a mysterious light in the galaxy came to define one of the world’s most authentic travel brands.
The story begins, fittingly, with the sea and the sky.
How We Landed on “Quasar”
Nearly twenty years after my first visit to the Galapagos—an experience that would change the course of my life—we were preparing to launch our own company. My husband, ever-enthusiastic about all things nautical, proposed a name: Quasar Nautica.
He was inspired by the brilliant stars sailors once used to navigate the open seas and find their place in a foreign world. As the brightest celestial bodies in the universe, quasars are the perfect metaphor for finding one’s way.
Such guiding light is exactly what we hoped to offer—experiences that helped travelers orient themselves in the world, not just geographically, but personally, too.
As our adventures expanded beyond the Galapagos to encompass mainland Ecuador, Peru, and the wilds of Patagonia, so did our vision. “Nautica” no longer captured the scope of our offerings. We needed a name that spoke not only to where we were going, but how we were going there: with purpose, wonder, and heart. That’s how the name Quasar Expeditions was born.
What Exactly Is a Quasar?
A quasar is a blazing bright stellar object—actually, the brightest object in the entire universe! When astronomers first came across these extremely luminous celestial bodies in the 1950s while scanning the sky with radio telescopes, they weren’t sure what they had just discovered. Because of the mystery behind these blazing objects, astronomers named them quasars, or “quasi stellar objects,” something that resembles a star without being a star.
It wasn’t until the 1980s—coincidentally, the same time we were launching our own Quasar—that astronomers used more powerful equipment to come to the consensus that these brilliant lights were actually the centers of black holes located billions of light years away from Earth. As sources of intense luminosity, quasars have always served as guides to the unknown.
That means my husband’s nautical instinct was right. Quasars, visible from Earth with the right tools, can serve as helpful beacons for explorers just like the stars once did for ancient mariners. What a fitting image for a company born from a love of nature and its mysterious power!
A Name That Mirrors Our Mission
Our name has always felt right. But recently, a conversation with one of our Guests—a professional astronomer—cast it in an even more meaningful light.
Quasars are not just luminous; they are also centers of immense energy, created from chaos and gravity, quietly shaping the galaxies that surround them. In many ways, they mirror the kind of travel experiences we strive to offer: transformational, illuminating, and full of wonder.
We like to think of our expeditions—whether sailing through the Galapagos Islands aboard a luxury yacht, trekking Patagonia’s remote trails, or uncovering the rich biodiversity of the Ecuadorian highlands — as more than just travel. They’re outward adventures with inward rewards: journeys that help you find your place in the world. Our Guests often return home not just with memories, but with a clearer sense of purpose and perspective.
That’s the magic we aim to create at Quasar Expeditions.
From the Galapagos to Patagonia: A Journey of Expansion
When we began in the Galapagos, our mission was not to build a large company. We simply wanted to share a place we loved with kindred, adventurous spirits who want to get more out of life, not escape it.
In the years since, Quasar Expeditions has evolved from that single point of light into a constellation of experiences across South America.
Today, we operate exclusive and immersive expeditions in:
- The Galapagos Islands – where conservation meets luxury
- Patagonia – home to some of the world’s most remote and wild landscape
- Peru – where history, culture, and cuisine converge in every experience
- Mainland Ecuador – with its rich biodiversity and authentic communities
Despite our growth, we’ve never strayed from our roots. We remain a family-owned company committed to conservation and authenticity through our thoughtfully crafted adventures that feel personal.
In every destination, we offer the same level of care and intention as we originally did in the Galapagos, working with local experts, staying in sustainable accommodations, and maintaining the small-group size that ensures a truly immersive adventure.
More Than a Name - A Guiding Light
If you’ve traveled with us before, you know: you’re not just a Guest, you’re family. We’ve had the privilege of sharing our favorite places with adventurers and nature enthusiasts from around the world who, like us, believe travel should be more than checking experiences off a list.
Whether you’re joining us for a once-in-a-lifetime Galapagos Yacht Safari, a Patagonia Overland Safari, or an extended adventure across the wilds of South America, we invite you to be part of a journey that started with the stars. In naming our company after the universe’s most radiant force, we unknowingly chose a metaphor that would shape our identity for decades.
Quasars shine from the darkest places in the cosmos. And that’s our mission: to be a guiding light in your journey. Not only through the landscapes of South America but through the deeper experience of connecting with yourself, with others, and with this awe-inspiring planet we call home.
