Perito Moreno Glacier Boardwalks

To date, the Perito Moreno Glacier remains one of the world’s only advancing glaciers. The 30 km (19 mile) long ice formation is 3 km (1.86 miles) wide at its terminus, and has a total ice depth of 170 meters (558 ft). The field is one of only three advancing Glaciers in Patagonia, and is an extension of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which has its source high in the Andes where Argentina and Chile meet.

The expansive, multi-level observation boardwalk in front of the Perito Moreno Glacier is a feat of engineering with which to appreciate this mammoth ice structure. The boardwalk offers a variety of perspectives from which to view the glacier’s face, from the top of the ridge above the glacier where you will find one of two park visitor centers, to an area down toward the face of the glacier. In fact, you can get close enough to read the warning signs which instruct you to back away in the case of big calving events.
