Great Grebe Facts
Name: Huala, Macá grande / Grat Grebe
Scientific Name: Podiceps major
Size: 60 to 65cm (26 to 28in)
From Coquimbo to Magallanes.
Annual resident, but some portions of the population migrate north for the winter.
Lakes and open ponds with rushes and marshes.
Insectivore, carnivore (arthropods and fish).
In spring they make floating nest in the middle of reeds, and lay 3 to 6 eggs.
There is no sexual dimorphism, and they can see in pairs. Its mournful cry is characteristic.
