Distribution:

From Coquimbo to Magallanes

Residence:

annual resident, but some portions of the population migrate north for the winter

Habitats:

lakes and open ponds with rushes and marshes

Food habits:

Insectivore, carnivore (anthropods and fish)

Reproduction:

In spring they make floating nest in the middle of reeds, and lay 3 to 6 eggs

Observations:

there is no sexual dimorphism, and they can see in pairs. Its mournful cry is characteristic.
