Charles Darwin - Galapagos Explorer

In 1986, a Notre Dame alumnus, Eduardo Diez and his wife Dolores Gangotena, pioneered high-end adventure cruises in the remote Galapagos Islands with his company Quasar Expeditions.

Celebrate this 30 year milestone with other Notre Dame alumni, as we invite you to be marvelled by the Galapagos Islands on a 7 night itinerary aboard the M/Y Grace. Guests will enjoy a short extension in the colonial city of Quito, the World’s First Unesco World Heritage Site, before venturing into the land of Darwin.

For a period in their history, the Galapagos Islands were known around the world as the “Enchanted Isles”.

There is a mysterious and fascinating serenity that can be sensed while navigating these waters. For thousands of years, countless species have evolved and adapted to these treacherous lands and, despite the extremely limited resources, they have made the Galapagos their home. It is only when we immerse ourselves in this remarkable archipelago, that we are able to fully comprehend what captivated Charles Darwin to formulate a new understanding of the origins of life.

Dragons that dive to over 30 feet beneath the waves in search for food, flightless birds that swim and fish underwater like bullet torpedo's and prehistoric giant tortoises with elephant-like feet that once roamed the earth with dinosaurs, are just a small fraction of the nearly 9,000 species, most found nowhere else in the world, that make the Galapagos Islands a haven for life.

There is no doubt the Galapagos archipelago is a living laboratory, for scientists, naturalists and passionate travelers, and should be preserved for future generations.

a notre dame family

Few have experienced the Galapagos the way Charles Darwin did: privately and intimately.

Make the Galapagos your personal get-away by reserving a cabin on this Notre Dame Alumni & Friends tailored departure.

The first time we sailed the Galapagos Islands was onboard a 1902 Baltic trader, a wooden sailing boat that transported cargo in the Baltic Sea. Her accomodations were probably not much different from those offered onboard the HMS Beagle when Charles Darwin first visited the archipelago. Nonetheless, the enchantment of the islands, untouched by human hands, was planted deep in our hearts. We knew then, the Galapagos was a place to be experienced as privately and intimately as possible. This was the birth of Quasar Expeditions.

Our yachts were selected and built to experience the islands the way we did long ago but with distinction, comfort and elegance.

We remember when we took our children onboard our first yacht, how wonderful it was to feel that nature was putting on a show exclusively for us. Sharing the encounters and discoveries of every day exculsively with your loved ones, is a wonderful priviledge.

We invite you to be enchanted by the Galapagos Islands.
