The Ecuador Coastal Region

Jungles, mangroves, tropical and dry forests, spectacular plantations, quaint fishing villages, and stunning beaches run the length of the more than 2,000 Kilometer expanse of Ecuadorian coast. Generally, the region is warm and humid with temperatures averaging 25 degrees C (76 F) to 31 C (90 F). The rainy season, from December to May, is warmer and down right muggy. The dry season is less humid but by no means dry.

Whale Watching & Machalilla National Park
Declared a National Park in 1979, Machalilla has a unique coastal ecology and marine habitat as well as containing an abundance of archaeological sites of the Machallilla and Manteño cultures, dating back to 1,500 BC. Here we can visit La Plata Island, which is physically and biologically similar to those in the Galapagos. Waved albatross, red-footed boobies and frigate birds nest at specific times of the year. A small colony of sea lions also call it home. A stay at Mantaraya lodge includes thorough visits to various areas of Machalilla National Park.

Ecuador Whale Watching Tours: From June to October , humpback whales congregate here to both court and give birth to their young. Proud whale males perform spectacular displays while competing for feminine attention. The coral reef around Plata Island and the adjacent coast is the only coral reef offshore mainland Ecuador and can be explored with scuba or snorkel gear.
