It is precisely our love for nature and the magic of the wonderful destinations that we visit that inspired our mission over two decades ago and it has always been our duty to preserve the ecosystem of this part of the world and to counterbalance man's impact on our environment. Nowadays travelers have high expectations regarding the responsibility of tour companies toward their country, indigenous communities and natural conservation. At Quasar Expeditions we are aware of our exceptional opportunity to support development and integration of local communities into our changing world, without losing their unique identity in the process. We are confident that our proactive efforts will be noticed and appreciated by future generations of responsible travelers and we achieve this goal through many sustainable practices such as the ones detailed on this page.

Foundations that support the environment
Quasar Expeditions is a permanent supporter and member of the Charles Darwin Foundation that works to preserve the Islands and its endangered species through research and knowledge gathered and distributed to the Scientific community. We are also members and supporters of Fundacion Natura, a non profit organization in Ecuador which actively works with the World Wildlife Fund, to identify and solve the environmental problems faced by the Galapagos and other National Parks of Ecuador. Fundacion Galapagos is yet another organization of which Quasar Expeditions is a member and an active supporter. This foundation is involved in the recycling of the waste produced by the tourism Industry and the population of Galapagos. Several projects are being executed such as recycling glass bottles to produce tiles for use in the Islands.

Waste Management Efforts
The ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands is very fragile and susceptible to even the smallest changes. Because Quasar Expeditions has been aware of this since the beginning, we strongly support a waste management effort that goes a long ways to make sure the Islands are not affected. Waste in the form of glass is recycled and used to make building blocks and other building materials. Plastic waste, burnt oils and other non bio-degradable waste is shipped back to the continent to be disposed of properly, thus the islands never see this effect. Plus, our operation has been carefully planned so that it utilizes the least amount of plastic and non-biodegradable waste as possible.

Technologies that minimize contamination
In the Galapagos Islands, we have invested in state of the art technologies for the engines and waste management systems of our yachts so that our presence is hardly felt on the Islands. Our engines are extremely clean running as a result of a combustion maximizing element that we have installed in all our ships and we produce very little waste in the form of burnt oil as a result of state of the art oil filtering system that we have also installed. Furthermore, the waste management system of our yachts has been meticulously designed so that no inorganic waste is ever released into the ocean. Such practices allow our guests to feel comfortable knowing that their presence on the Islands is unfelt.

The Boy Scouts Project of Galapagos
Affiliated with the WFIS (World Federation of Independent Scouts) the Boy Scout Project of Galapagos is a youth-development organization that empowers children from the Islands to develop in life and reach their full potential by becoming active participants in the conservation of the Galapagos Islands. At Quasar Expeditions, we were aware that the long-term conservation of the Islands depended directly on the awareness of the local population about the fragility of the ecosystem of their home. Since 2006, Quasar Expeditions has been the unique sponsor of the Boy Scouts of Galapagos and since then we have sponsored vacation camps, donated uniforms and kayaks, sponsored seminars and other courses for young scouts and scout instructions and obtained the concession of a 20,000 m2 piece of land for the Boy Scouts of Galapagos. By providing a monthly allowance to Mr Carlos Gil, the scout leader and provincial delegate, we work together to educate the children of Galapagos about the problems that the Islands, their home, face today.

Support of Local Communities in Continental Ecuador
In the countryside of continental Ecuador, Quasar Expeditions only works with suppliers (haciendas, jungle lodges, restaurants, etc) who provide training and employment to the local population, thus creating awareness of the positive effects that tourism can bring. Our highly qualified guides are a strong influence in local communities to build an understanding of the advantages they have to improve their living conditions, while at the same time bringing awareness of their unique cultural qualities and the beauty of their immediate environment. As a successful tour operator we have influence in government programs that will develop tourism, probably the lowest-impact industry that will benefit the entire world by preventing abuse and destruction of natural resources. In most destinations, our itineraries include the opportunity for tourists to interact with the local population by visiting a schools and social service programs where our company delivers, on behalf of each tourist, a contribution.

The Genocide Intervention Network
The Genocide Intervention Network empowers individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. Members of this network, like Quasar Expeditions, envision a world in which the global community is willing and able to protect civilians from genocide and mass atrocities. As part of the anti-genocide movement, the network raises both money and political will for civilian protection initiatives around the world. Quasar Expeditions' donations are auctioned off and the money is used to contribute to the efforts to prevent and stop genocide around the world, specially in Darfur.

The Fiver Children's Foundation
The Fiver Children's Foundation is a comprehensive youth development organization that helps children from underserved communities to develop their life skills. Fiver's 10 year commitment to each child includes year-round mentoring and counseling programs, a character building residential summer program, and partnerships with schools and community based organizations. Quasar Expeditions' donations to the Fiver Foundation are auctioned off each year and the proceeds go towards the Fiver fund that helps children from New York.
